New increase in price!

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Since Wednesday, one kilogram of white sugar is now sold at Rs 19.50 against Rs 10.95 and this is the recommended selling price. The price has now been liberalised and us, consumers will pay more in practice. The price increase may be explained by the fact that the sugar community, planters and industrials will no longer be subsidising the white crystal. According to the Chamber of Agriculture, the price of sugar since 1991 has remained unchanged and the subsidies have cost the sugar industry an additional rs250 to 300 millions each year. “Dans le contexte de la reforme du secteur, cette mesure est acceuillie comme une bouffee d’air frais par tous les planteurs” dixit the Chamber of Agriculture.

So dear consumers, for one kg of white sugar, prepare to pay more than rs 20. Raw sugar will cost twice. Recession obliges reduce your sugar intake also. Also prepare yourself to spend more on cakes and sugar based delicacies.Ile Maurice ile durable?? May be this will reduce the number of diabetes given that we top the world list in terms of amputation due to diabetes complication.

Exit House, enter life!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Today Tuesday 27th January 2009. “Life” will be aired after the last episode of Dr House last week. Life is about the story of a detective who is given a second chance to serve the force after serving time in prison for a crime he did not commit. Charlie Crews’ (played by Damian Lewis)  new lease on life has provided him with a Zen-like outlook, peace of mind and no need for vengeance, an attitude which can be challenging to maintain when someone he cares about is threatened — or when he is investigating the mystery surrounding the murder he was falsely accused of.

Another crime solving mystery police series. Does not seem to hook me up at first sight. Am eagerly waiting for the 30th January 2009 for “Ugly Betty” to be aired.

Heat, humidity and bites!

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Very very hot!!! Not a breeze and a high humidity. Heard that the sea current around our coast has been hotter that those near the equator. No wonder, we witnessed the formation of cyclonic depressions near Rodrigues and in the Mozambique canal. Torrential rains and storms of these last two weeks have only brought a temporary heat quench. Now more than ever, the intense heat and the ubiquitous mosquitoes with their acrobatic swings around ears and some times in front of your eyes are ruining my sleep and are speeding up the ageing process.

Coupled with that, mud are obstructing the filters at water treatment plants and water is only flowing at half their usual volume. So in an attempt to retard the perspitation process after shower, we take the latter later at night. We should resign to that state of mind because late at night, the flow is even meagrer.

Any luckier on yr side?

Sea temperature!

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Fish was found dead at Anse la Raie and Baie aux huitres. Initial sea water test reveals no abnormal chemical composition. Scientists at Albion experimental station collected the bodies for further test in view of the expansion of the number of dead bodies. Scientists may explain this phenomenon to lower oxygen level in the sea due to the rise of 2 deg in the sea temperature. Indeed not only has land temperature risen during the last month but also that of the sea. Apparently this has risen above 30 deg.

On another level, btw the price of dholl puri has decreased by MUR 1.00

January 2009!

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

First of all, a happy new year to all! Belated wishes! Beze sa. En an fini passer….

34 deg. And the temp is still not decreasing. Think need to put a hamac and sleep on it. The mattress is too hot even after airing. It is only at three in the morning that the temp is reasonable. But then four hours sleep is not enough. No wonder, i am feeling drowsy afterwards. It did rain a few days back but as soon as the rays hit the ground, back to square one.

On a different note, the police acquired three mobile radars lately to track speed lovers. In less than 6 days, 350 vehicles (according to MBC news!)  have been flashed. However there have been reports that the fotos of contract vehicles and motorcycles equipped with flashy plate numbers are printed blurred.

Most private companies will resume their activities on the 7th although some will be 9th. Public companies and govt sector will resume on Monday. Schools will resume on the 12th. However form 1 and standard one students will take the classroom classes on the 9th. Before we took our annual leave last year, the boss did mention of the economic crisis and added that next year (that is 2009) will be very difficult. I shall update on the actions he will be taking, probably downsizing again, but the personnel is already a strict minimum. Oh well nice resumption to all! And don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
