Since Saturday, our PABX line went dead. We could neither make or receive calls. We did not bother and thought it would be only temporary. On Monday, same scenario. I decided to phone Mauritius Telecom on 8900. The operator took my contact info and I insisted that a technician be sent as soon as possible. The operator replied that a team will be sent on site should they be around. Later i noticed that ADSL line too was dead. This time i phoned 8902. Here again the opeator took my contact info and same rhetoric when i insisted that mails exchanges can not be made and we needed to send or receive faxes.

The boss’ wife came into play and called X, Y, Z to phone MT to enquire and send technicians as soon as possible. Finally, she talked to one of our managers who happens to know someone at MT. Soon after the contact came and checked all our phone lines. He called MT and it was then that we came to know that a nervous system at Coromandel went down and it was the reason for the faults.

Day 2-Today. Still no ring tones. The wife again called the manager. He replied to her that the fault was common to all locations in Coromandel. Later surprise! MT technicians were around. They were very caring and asked about locations of central exchange box. It was in the afternoon that i knew (through the wife) that the manager after consultation with the boss promised the technicians a reward if they could solve the problem very quickly. No comments!!!

The APM committee met on Thursday to decide on the price of petrol and diesel for the next 4 months. Much to our expectations, following the curbing of petrol prices on the world market, the price of petrol met a 5% decrease to become MUR 46.80 instead of MUR49.50 per litre. Heavy oil rose from MUR 15.8117 to MUR 18.97 while diesel suffered a maximum increase of 20%. The new price as from Thursday midnight was MUR 51.20 Now more than ever, companies are complaining about the bitter increase and as usual, it is expected that price of bus fare, bread and other local commodities too will increase. Once again the Mauritian population will suffer in silence.

Today while looking at panier bazar, i could only be surprised at the price of porc meat. I knew 5 years back that the price of one pound of meat was Rs45.00 Then there was the issue of infected pigs. At that time the price was Rs 90.00 Now to my utter surprise, it has risen to Rs 130 per pound!!!! Ouahhh 300 percent increase. Unbelievable!

Does someone know the price of one pound of beef or poultry? Considering the price increase spiral, guess that those too have suffered the same fate. What about the price of vegetables? Guess that those too have risen… Ki pou manger do??

Second holiday forcer for all primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. 18 primary schools will remain closed tomorrow, Friday 19th September 2008, as a result of heavy torrential rains prevailing on the island. More than 200 mm rainfall have been collected and most of our reservoirs are at least 83% full, except for Midlands and Piton du Milieu which are 100% full.

Flooding is expected to occur and as a result of heavy saturation of the ground. Already houses near to rivers and areas where there are no proper drainage systems are victims of flooding and water entering their homes. The North and East and South are mostly affected. Now landslides are threatening areas between GRSE and Beau Champ. Police are warning road users to be careful in these regions.

As to 1945hrs, the country is still under torrential rain warning and it will be tomorrow when parents will be informed whether school will resume. For horse racing lovers, the event will probably be postponed to Sunday. The track is not practicable.

It was so funny what happened today. The boss’ wife could not get a printout from her newly bought desk jet. She has been planning her sister’s wedding since one month and it is now that she is printing menu cards or programme 4 days prior to the great day. Since she could not print from her printer, she sent the job to my printer. The hardcopy was pale. She used to print her son’s colloriage and puzzle games, and wedding gowns pictures on my printer. No surprise the toner got low. She asked me to change the toner, to which i replied i do not have a new one. I urged her to get a technician to solve her printing problem.

The technician could not make it and she again called me to the rescue. I responded annoyed since i got loads of work to do, and so reluctantly asked for the printer manual, checked the ink cartridge, switched on and off the printer, and finally got to the printer manager to kill all pending print jobs. I finally called a test page. Great was my surprise to see that the printer cable was not connected to her laptop!!! When i made the remark to her, she replied who disconnected the cable. Her brother was there and he replied who else other than her could disconnect the cable when she brought the laptop back home.

Oh dear! Ki mon faire pou merite sa??? Si li ti blonde mo ti pou compran, enfin ena exception.

From what I read on the blog tracker much has been said about the Beijing Olympics games 2008. Will not talk about it since did not watch the show as returned quite late on that ‘auspicious day’. Had to input nth transactions as acquired new software as old one no longer reliable. Back and hand ache. Had to acquire new PC. The bright side is that there is a 17 inch LCD on my office table. Intended date to go live is end of month if everything goes smoothly. So in the meantime no statement sent to debtors and no report to management.

At twelve, shut down computer as no longer able to input. Decided to visit infotech salon with a colleague. Did not plan to do so but since we were around he agreed to go there. The stand which attracted our attention was Pascal Computer’s with its Asus motherboard, its huge fan in its transparent minitower casing. After strolling around the salon for about 20 mins we decided to leave as nothing interesting popped up. As usual took a nap once home and woke up 2 hours later looking for food as did not lunched. Decided to bake cake. So took out butter, eggs, sugar, baking flour, and mixed all of them and everything in the oven. So after a hard day work, au dodo. Ouch! My neck and back still ache.

Think i have become quite nostalgic about food prepared by old people. When i came to think about it, young people like me know little about the preparation of recipes held by old persons. When my aunt came to pass away, i could not help a selfish thought that i would no longer taste such and such delicacies and food. This season is auspicious for the preparation of bottled ham choy and dried ham choy.

These delicacies take a long time to prepare.Must dry in the sun, salt them, then steam, re dry again for umpteen days until dried. Then store in cool dry place. With the hectic life we are living, even with the knowledge gathered, such recipes will definitely be lost. There is a difference when a mentor is behind you. Even during exams a mentor makes a difference. S/he will correct your mistakes when you made them. So you know when you make them and not redo again. I am talking about one among the many recipes upheld by old persons which we young people have taken for granted when we were still kids and when our parents were teaching us but too young to remember.

Even then our parents would not let us ‘met la pain a la pate’. We would just stand back and watch as idled spectators.

Another employee has been sacked on Friday, on the grounds of prolonged absenteeism. But we all know that it is in the process of downsizing that employees are being made redundant. Those in service for less than one year are top in the list, since there is nothing more to pay than the 2 weeks salary.

On Tuesday, upon advice of a labour consultant, the boss talked with the employee and notified him of prolonged absenteeism and irregular performance at work. Then he informed him verbally and through a letter that on Friday he had to appear before a disciplinary committee who will decide on his future employability at the company. We all know that the boss’ mind has already been made up and this was all administrative procedures and paper works. So on Friday after being heard by the committee, he was given his termination of employment letter together with his exgratia payment with immediate effect.

When we discussed among ourselves the reason behind such tactics, we learned that the boss has become nostalgic about his beginning in the business. There were fewer employees but money was overflowing the drawers-’pa conner kot casse p sorti’. On the other hand there is a contraction in business activities also. Many companies like textile companies are closing their doors. Sales has also been sluggish. In the event of failing to meet target, i was told that there would be further redundancies. Unbelievable!! I think that in the end the company would be run by the boss and his wife… O moins la pa bisin paye salaire
