Summer blues!

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

Howdy, dear readers.

Been slack these months, years. So hopefully, this article will be one of many and not the only this year. **Cough**

We are already in full summer and probably most of us are complaining about the heat and humidity in our daily life, be it at work or at home. If you have air conditioning or dehumidifier at work you won’t feel the discomfort at least not in the coziness of your office. When you are out, be it at lunch or after work, you will probably feel the discomfort. At home too, opening all windows and doors will do no good unless there is a breeze which will cool you down. Forget about electric fans which lately have been the buzz of the town. They bring more hotness than coolness in your sleeping room. And your mattress is like a hot furnace only waiting to fry you when you lie on it. So no surprise when you can not sleep for 2-3 continuous days and when the strain takes toll on you and you have no choice but to collapse on the furnace and wake up with a big head ache and sweat all over.

It is good to sleep around 4-5 am when finally it cools down, but only 2 hours before it’s time to wake up and get ready to work. So sometimes you have to bear with it and if you are lucky when your boss is not around or you are the boss yourself, have a nap at work :p At your own risks and perils of course!!!

If I  wake up too early and can not sleep back (sommeil casser),  i would dress up and go jogging up the mountain. It feels good to feel the before dawn breeze on your face. However it is still pitch dark and sometimes you will see shadows or feel like someone is following you. **Hair stands on end ** And tell to myself what are you doing here?? To reassure myself, i will sing something hopefully ghosts will not wake up and shut me down. Once i did just that and someone was climbing down the mountain and just look in my direction.  Alas for me, he could not catch my face otherwise i would inevitably be the star of Mauritius got talent LOL! So after 45 minutes or so,  i finally reach the top and could catch a glimpse of the rays lazily piercing through the grey clouds.  Having engulfed my lungs with all the possible fresh air, i finally made my way down to my sauna home, eagerly waiting for the sun to set down thus bringing cool breeze.

So what do you do when you wake up too early (sommeil casser)?

No air con in an air con public transport!

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Once upon a time, in an afternoon after two, i took the bus to Rose Hill. Needless to say it was hell hot these days. So i decided to catch the conditioned bus hoping that I could get some comfort out of this intense heat. A cool air greeted me once i stepped in. As i took my seat, i started to feel relieved. A gushing cool air flowing throughout the seat. What a pleasant atmosphere compared to the hot and humid air outside, and a simple mortal enjoying such a luxury thing!!  The bus started to move. I fastened my belt and off we took off. Oh wait, this is not a plane!!

As the bus started to gather momentum, we noticed that something’s wrong, The air conditioning had gone down. Oh no, despite the desperate attempt of the driver to switch it on,no avail!!  After we went through 2 stops, the fare collector opened the air vent on the top of the bus and the driver opened the door. There were no windows, and barely no air flowed in. I started to feel the humidity and heat sticking on the skin. Some passengers started to complain while others looked up and tried to adjust the air con flow, still not knowing what’s going on. At the 4th stop, the collector refused to take in more passengers as it would implied smelly sweats and eventually suffocation. At the next stop, our bus stopped behind a broken down bus belonging to the same company and there were passengers waiting under the scorching heat. The collector got down, and did something outside. Oh wait, what’s that sound? Yes, this is air conditioning coming back. We are saved!!!  There is a hero after all. The collector invited the other “passengers” in with a big smile and off we departed again.

I jumped off two stops away in my wet shirt hoping not to experience that adventure again. As i reached my destination, i drank half a litre of water and welcomed the conditioned air in my face and took off my shirt and… Oops sorry.

Well that pretty summed up my 20 minutes’ trip without air con in an air con public transport. Have a nice hot , smelly, humid night or day!!

37 deg???

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

And i thought it was only in dodo land that it is very hot. At midnight on Monday 11th,  it was 37 deg. in Melbourne. Locals were unable to sleep and flocked to ice cream parlours and the beaches for some night swimming. Southern Australia remains high on risk on fire alert warnings. At 27 deg at night we are complaining about intense heat but when hearing about the situation in Aussie, we could not help but say to ourselves that we are still lucky. Tiredness and lack of sleep will accompany us for the remaining months of summer and for those who are enjoying cool air and good sleep, thumps up!

Summer already??

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Some days back, it would seem that summer has already reached our shore. Was very hot and on top of that, there were the famous humming sounds near the ears and big red swollen bites on legs, arms and neck. On the way back home, we tuned on the radio, and the talk was inevitably H1n1. So after nth recommendations and stated facts by his guests, the presenter was saying that summer is yet to come and the meteorological station was forecasting a fall in temperature in the hours to come. Will the fall last 12 hours later? Stay tuned for the latest update, check sa!!! Hahaha!

10 deg!

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Just heard that lowest temp this winter is forecast to be10 deg.  Winter should have already started but it seems that we are still in a transition period and the cold season would be later than expected. Surprisingly we had cold temperatures during the first few days of the month but lately the temperature has risen uncomfortably to decrease substantially at night. No wonder auspicious for flu spreading…

Heat, humidity and bites!

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Very very hot!!! Not a breeze and a high humidity. Heard that the sea current around our coast has been hotter that those near the equator. No wonder, we witnessed the formation of cyclonic depressions near Rodrigues and in the Mozambique canal. Torrential rains and storms of these last two weeks have only brought a temporary heat quench. Now more than ever, the intense heat and the ubiquitous mosquitoes with their acrobatic swings around ears and some times in front of your eyes are ruining my sleep and are speeding up the ageing process.

Coupled with that, mud are obstructing the filters at water treatment plants and water is only flowing at half their usual volume. So in an attempt to retard the perspitation process after shower, we take the latter later at night. We should resign to that state of mind because late at night, the flow is even meagrer.

Any luckier on yr side?

Sea temperature!

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Fish was found dead at Anse la Raie and Baie aux huitres. Initial sea water test reveals no abnormal chemical composition. Scientists at Albion experimental station collected the bodies for further test in view of the expansion of the number of dead bodies. Scientists may explain this phenomenon to lower oxygen level in the sea due to the rise of 2 deg in the sea temperature. Indeed not only has land temperature risen during the last month but also that of the sea. Apparently this has risen above 30 deg.

On another level, btw the price of dholl puri has decreased by MUR 1.00

Heat wave!

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

It’s been very very hot lately. Yesterday, i woke up at 1.00 am because it was too hot. I simply can’t sleep. I went downstairs and switched on the television. There was a french film aired and without conviction i watched it till three. Needless to say, when i woke up at seven, my eyes were very sleepy and sored. But i had to go to work. I did not do much at work, except some filing. And after 3 hours of ‘hard work’, off home. After lunch, i dashed back to my bedroom where i dozed for one hour, feeling somehow energised by that somewhat one hour rest.

Heat waves in the mean time continue to radiate through the walls and the intense light reflected from panes and white walls. Wind, please blow!! Rain please fall!! Please hear a sinner’s prayers!! Damnit i have a headache now. What’s next?

Cool air!
